Horrific accident: “We could no longer help her”
An extremely tragic traffic accident is causing consternation in Styria: a 53-year-old female driver left the Ennstal road, the car was catapulted through the air, landed on parked cars and caught fire. All help came too late for the woman. An eyewitness describes the terrible moments.
There is deep consternation in the Enns Valley after a tragic traffic accident on the accident-prone B 320 on Saturday, which cost the life of a 53-year-old local woman.
According to the police, the woman left the road on the Ennstalstraße in Diemlach (municipality of Mitterberg-St. Martin) early on Saturday afternoon for an unexplained reason and crashed into the concrete base of a bicycle underpass.
Due to the force of the impact, the car was catapulted upwards and crashed into several parked cars, which were parked at a popular inn and biker meeting place.
Car flown through the air
"I was just on the terrace when I heard a huge roar, then suddenly a car crashed through a billboard and flew onto three parked cars," describes landlord Manfred Schierl, who witnessed the unbelievable scenes first-hand from his inn.
The car immediately started to burn and the three parked cars were also on fire.
"We were completely helpless"
The landlord and some guests wanted to rush to the 53-year-old's aid, "but we couldn't get anywhere near her, it was so extremely hot, unfortunately we were completely helpless", said the witness. When the first firefighters arrived, it was already too late. They could no longer help the woman, she died in the fire inferno.
"We're used to a lot here, this is the third accident at this location, but I've never experienced anything like this before," says landlord Manfred Schierl.
Emergency crews from five fire departments extinguished the burning vehicles. "Four cars were completely burnt down, two others were hit pretty badly. The façade of an adjacent building was also on fire," says Christoph Schlüßlmayr from the Liezen area fire brigade, describing the challenging operation.
Over 20 people, emergency personnel and witnesses, were looked after by the crisis intervention team.
