According to Adelheid Kastner's psychiatric report, a 42-year-old man who stabbed his wife in Linz, ran down two police officers while fleeing and robbed several cars is not sane and remains dangerous because: "Nobody knows what is going on in his head." Verdict: hospitalization.

The Iraqi has been on trial before a jury in Linz since the previous week. The public prosecutor's office has applied for him to be committed to a forensic-therapeutic center. Kastner presented her expert opinion on Thursday. "We are a long way away from any significant treatment success," she says, noting that there is no alternative to a closed psychiatric institution.

Wife and children drowned in the sea
The story of the man concerned - as he is not sane, he is not referred to as a defendant - is unclear for long stretches, but is likely to have been very dramatic. As a Yazidi, he apparently fled with his family from Iraq via Turkey in the direction of Austria. According to him, his wife and children - it is unclear how many - drowned in the Mediterranean. He was treated several times in Austria because he was depressed.

Admitted to a psychiatric ward
He has two children with a new partner, but he lost contact - presumably also because he repeatedly attracted attention due to his aggressiveness and drinking. He also lost his status as a person entitled to subsidiary protection. He was once forcibly admitted to a psychiatric ward after he went on a rampage at Linz train station and jumped into the fountain. In a new relationship - with the victim of the crime for which he is on trial - he was also aggressive and extremely jealous. His jealousy had escalated into a "delusion", Kastner said, "and that is a disease".

No orderly conversation possible
Examining the man concerned was "only possible to a limited extent because he was unable to have an orderly conversation". He had made completely confused statements. Due to the "word salad" he uttered and his auditory hallucinations, she diagnosed a schizophrenic disorder. He also had a dissociative disorder - a "complete loss of memory of the past". He no longer knew whether he had children - although he had previously lamented the death of his children in the Mediterranean for years. According to Kastner, this can be triggered by tragic experiences. Treatment had not worked for a long time, and even today - despite eight months of treatment - he is still conspicuous.

Further offenses possible
Kastner assumes that the illness was already "in full swing" at the time of the crime. "It is also quite conceivable that some of the criminal acts were carried out on the orders of hallucinated persons." As far as a prognosis is concerned, it is to be expected that he could also commit serious crimes in the future, because: If he gets orders from the voices in his head, "then he does it". She doubts that he will ever be free of symptoms.

Stepdaughter intervened
Early in the morning of January 9, 2023, the Iraqi is said to have fatally stabbed and strangled his still-wife with a knife. His eleven-year-old stepdaughter intervened and probably saved her mother's life. He then allegedly threatened to kill one of his wife's colleagues. Shortly before midday - a manhunt was already underway for him - he then raced straight towards a checkpoint in his car, according to the indictment. A policewoman and her colleague were seriously injured.

Only confessed to a few points
He then allegedly grabbed the unconscious officer's assault rifle and aimed it at the policewoman and several other road users until he managed to rob a car. After a few hundred meters he caused an accident with it and tried again to get a car by force of arms, but was finally overpowered by the police. The victim only confessed to a few points. He repeatedly referred to gaps in his memory or that he was mentally ill.

The verdict is final
The jury found the attack on the woman to be attempted murder by 7:1. They unanimously agreed that the attempted murder of the two police officers, dangerous threats against his stepdaughter, his wife's work colleague, several police officers and road users, as well as several robberies of vehicles and violations of the Weapons Act were fulfilled. The court also unanimously ruled in favor of the question of his lack of sanity. The court committed the Iraqi to a forensic-therapeutic center. The verdict is final.
