Body in the Marchfeld Canal: Hammer as the murder weapon
More and more details are coming to light about the murder of an Iranian man in Vienna. At a press conference on Friday, it was announced that the murder weapon had been recovered. It is a hammer. It was only found by good luck.
As reported, the 38-year-old murder suspect has already made a comprehensive confession. In his interrogation, he admitted that he had met the man in his apartment in Vienna-Hietzing between 4 and 5 pm on the day of his disappearance and had confronted him there.
Dispute over 9000 euros
According to Gerhard Winkler, head of the investigation department of the Vienna State Criminal Police Office, it was about a sum of money amounting to 9,000 euros, which the victim is said to have embezzled from the 38-year-old. This led to an argument and a scuffle, as a result of which the younger man pulled out a sledgehammer that he had bought the day before and brought with him to the argument and hit the 45-year-old on the head several times.
Hammer disposed of on flatbed truck
The 38-year-old then disposed of the hammer on the back of a flatbed truck at a construction site in Vienna-Währing in the hope that the car would eventually drive away with the murder weapon. But that was not the case. The hammer was found unchanged on the flatbed truck by investigators yesterday, Thursday, and recovered.
How the suspect cut up the man's body and disposed of it in the Marchfeld Canal is still under investigation.
The ball was set rolling by an angler who had fished a leg out of the Marchfeld Canal. Other body parts, including the head of the murder victim, were then gradually recovered.
Messages sent to family
The suspect was finally arrested at the beginning of the week. The 38-year-old and his later victim (45) had been friends for years. After the murder, the suspect tried to play down or gloss over the disappearance of the 45-year-old to the family. He is also believed to have used the dead man's cell phone to send messages to the family, which the relatives identified as false, not least because of the specific way they were worded.
