Too “sexy”: Image of Jesus upsets Spaniards
A new painting of Jesus Christ is currently causing a stir among many Catholics in Spain. Too pretty, too sexy, too profane and too kitschy - these are just some of the criticisms of the work by artist Salustiano Garcia Cruz from Seville. The discussion on social networks is heated.
"Art is a daughter of freedom, and from the necessity of spirits, not from the necessity of matter, it wants to receive its prescription," wrote the poet Friedrich Schiller in 1793.
However, when it comes to religion, it is important to be sensitive, respectful and reverent when creating artificial designs so as not to give the impression of blasphemy.
But that is exactly what has now happened in Seville, Spain - at least according to many Catholic believers. They are "rubbing up against" a poster that is intended to advertise Easter celebrations in the tradition-steeped city. It shows a Jesus who looks far too sexy and smart.
Jesus is depicted in the picture with fine - many even too feminine - facial features. His long, shiny hair is flowing over his shoulders. He is not wearing a crown of thorns, only two small wounds can be seen on one hand and in the chest area. His abdomen is covered by a cloth.
"This could also be a popstar!"
Nothing of the suffering of Jesus Christ, who was executed on the cross, can be seen here. "This could also be a pop star," complains a woman on X. Many see it the same way, some even suspect blasphemy.

The artist's son was the model
Artist Salustiano Garcia Cruz takes the criticism in his stride. His son was the model and he wanted to show a Jesus of the Resurrection, the bright side of Holy Week: "If someone sees something dirty in my painting, then that is the result of their own dirtiness, which they are projecting onto the painting."
The mayor of Seville defended the artist and his work. "I like it, it's courageous and takes a risk," the newspaper ABC quoted him as saying. All the excitement is a bit "artificial".
