Gusts of up to 110 km/h
Warning: Storm gusts of around 110 km/h are imminent
The Austrian Severe Weather Center (UWZ) had already warned of strong gusts of wind on Sunday. However, the peak of the storm is still to come! Gusts of up to 110 km/h are expected by Monday afternoon. The storm has already caused chaos on the Grossglockner: two climbers in distress could not be rescued due to the storm and are still stuck there.
In Lower Austria, Vienna and Burgenland - as on Sunday - a red warning is in force. In Upper and Lower Austria, as well as Vienna and in the north of Styria, there are already gusts of up to 100 km/h. In these regions in particular, the wind is expected to continue to blow strongly until the afternoon. According to the Austrian Severe Weather Center, even 110 km/h are possible on the eastern edge of the Alps.
Czechs are stuck on the Grossglockner
The storm has already caused dangerous situations in some areas. For example on the Großglockner. Two mountaineers got into difficulties there on Sunday evening after a rockfall. The two Czechs - an initial police report had mentioned Slovaks - were climbing the north face when the incident occurred. They were injured but still managed to reach the Glockner bivouac.
Due to the storm, the two alpinists could not be reached and rescued by helicopter for the time being; this will probably only be possible on Tuesday, according to the police. An ascent by mountain rescuers would take hours, but after consultation with the two injured men, with whom they are in contact by cell phone, this was decided against. The men were in good spirits and had stated that they could hold out in the bivouac for longer. The police said that the situation would be assessed again on Tuesday morning.
In addition, the strong storm had swept over Kottingbrunn (district of Baden) on Sunday evening. There, the L151 and other roads had to be closed for almost two hours because the roof of a company building was covered. In addition, a glass front of the building was destroyed by the storm.

Up to 18 degrees on Monday
However, it's not just the strong winds that are unusual on Monday, but also the temperatures: 9 to 18 degrees are still in store for us during the day. In Vienna, it's already 8 to 12 degrees in the morning. Gale-force gusts of 106 km/h have already been measured there.
"We currently have a slightly increased number of operations, but we were alerted shortly before 6 a.m. to a torn-off tin roof in the 12th district in Michael Bernhard Gasse," said Jürgen Figerl, spokesperson for the Vienna Fire Department, on Monday.
Billboard fell onto the south highway
The Wiener Neudorf volunteer fire department (Mödling district) also had to deal with a tricky operation. With wind speeds of more than 105 km/h, a billboard for Shopping City Süd (SCS) came loose.
Parts of it fell onto the southern highway (A2). The sign was ultimately secured using tension belts, as it was not possible to dismantle it due to the gusts of wind.
