One year after the earthquake
“
On February 6, it was exactly one year ago that the devastating earthquake hit Turkey and Syria. Many people are still living in emergency shelters such as containers or tents. Destroyed water and sewage pipes have not yet been restored in many places.
More than 55,000 people lost their lives in the earthquake. And even a year later, hundreds of thousands are unfortunately still suffering from the damage caused by the natural disaster.
Austria's willingness to donate was enormous
"A total of around 14 million people have been reached with donations from all over the world. But the scale of the earthquake is simply so massive that unfortunately this willingness to help is simply not enough. So we are still dependent on donations," says Teresa Mayr, Coordination International Disasters and Crises at the WCC.
The effects of the earthquakes are also clearly being felt in the psychosocial field. Many women, men and children are traumatized and need help. The path back to a normal life will continue to take a very long time for those affected.
"The Turkish Red Crescent and the Syrian Arab Red Crescent are offering psychosocial support. For example, they offer child-friendly spaces especially for children, where activities for children are implemented, from drawing to playing, everything is possible there.
