Fire departments in action
Gusts of 115 km/h swept across the vast country
Uprooted and snapped trees, covered roofs, torn-off billboards - violent gusts of wind kept the emergency services on their toes on Monday. The districts of Mödling and Baden were particularly affected.
Wind speeds of up to 115 km/h were measured on the Jauerling in the district of Krems on Monday, while the gusts reached 112 km/h at the Buchbergerwarte in the Vienna Woods between Maria Anzbach and Neulengbach, according to meteorologists. The storm kept the emergency services throughout Lower Austria on their toes. In the morning alone, fire departments had to be called out more than 70 times. Especially in the southern outskirts of Vienna, it was necessary to remove the traces of the sometimes gale-force winds.
Sheet metal roof flew away
In Kottingbrunn in the district of Baden, gusts of wind covered the approximately 400 square meter sheet metal roof of a company warehouse. Debris was also thrown against a neighboring company building and onto the surrounding road. Road closures were the result. And in Mödling, two large trees fell onto the road in Husarentempelgasse; firefighters sawed up and secured the trunks.
Billboard on the highway
A dicey incident occurred in Wiener Neudorf in the district of Mödling, where an SCS billboard was torn loose and parts of it fell onto the highway, where fortunately no accidents occurred. The emergency services secured the sign with lashing straps. According to the firefighters, it was not possible to dismantle it due to the gusts of wind.
Traffic accidents due to storm
Drivers were also affected by the storm. On the B17 in Teesdorf, for example, a car trailer was hit by strong gusts of wind and pushed into the ditch, where it overturned. Between Berndorf and Großau, a fallen tree blocked the B212. A driver was unable to avoid the tree and crashed into it.
Tree falls on a hut
The tarpaulin of a foil greenhouse was torn loose by the storm in Altenmarkt an der Triesting, the emergency services had to secure the parts. A short time later, the volunteers were called to the Klein-Mariazell district, where an uprooted tree had fallen onto a garden shed.
