Biden threatens veto
Republicans remove Ukraine from billion-euro deal
The US Senate has introduced a bill that links US immigration policy with aid for Israel and Ukraine. However, the delicate project is becoming increasingly complicated for US President Joe Biden. This is because the Republicans in the House of Representatives are planning to remove Ukraine from the bill.
US President Biden's administration wants to veto the Republican bill, which only includes Israel: "The administration strongly opposes this bill, which does nothing to secure the border, does nothing to help the Ukrainian people defend themselves against Putin's aggression, does nothing to support the security of American synagogues, mosques, and vulnerable places of worship, and denies humanitarian assistance to Palestinian civilians."
Months of work for nothing?
The White House Office of Management and Budget further noted in a statement on Monday (local time): "The Administration urges both chambers of Congress to reject this political ploy and instead swiftly send the bipartisan National Security Supplemental Appropriations Act to the President's desk."
Administration officials had worked for months with Democrats and Republicans in the Senate on a bill that was introduced Sunday. It combines an overhaul of U.S. immigration policy and new funding for border security with billions of dollars in emergency aid for Ukraine, Israel and partners in the Indo-Pacific region.
Republicans threaten Biden
The 118 billion dollar (roughly 110 billion euro) measure would also provide humanitarian aid to civilians affected by global conflicts.

Republican Speaker of the House Mike Johnson announced on Saturday that the House would reject the Senate's bipartisan bill and instead vote this week on a measure that only helps Israel.
"The president's veto threat is an act of treason," Johnson said in a statement Monday night. "By threatening to veto aid to Israel and our armed forces, President Biden is abandoning our ally in its hour of greatest need."
Trump exerts pressure in the background
Republicans are bitterly divided over the legislation, with Donald Trump - the frontrunner for his party's presidential nomination - and his closest allies vocally opposing it, calling the Senate plan insufficiently tough.
Trump has made border security with Mexico one of the main talking points in his campaign against Biden ahead of the November election.
The election campaign is already raging in the USA:
The Republican-majority House of Representatives passed a bill in November that focused exclusively on Israel. It was never discussed in the Democratic-led Senate, as the MPs were supposed to put together a broader package of measures at Biden's request.
