Defeat for Trump rival Haley in Nevada

Former UN Ambassador Nikki Haley has suffered a heavy defeat in the US Republican presidential primary in the state of Nevada. The only remaining intra-party rival to former President Donald Trump received 32% of the vote on Tuesday, significantly less than the "none of these candidates" option, which received more than 61%. Haley had virtually no opponents and Trump's name was not on the ballot.

In this case, the result has no concrete influence on the race for the Republican nomination: winning the primary is not decisive for the delegate votes, which are important for the party conventions where the parties' candidates are formally nominated.

Republicans ignored Nevada primary
The reason for this is a dispute between the state authorities and the Republicans in Nevada. The party had decided to ignore the primary in the US state and hold its own so-called caucus on Thursday, in which Donald Trump is the only important candidate and in which the delegate votes are also distributed.

For Haley, the result in Nevada is a further setback. She had already lost to Trump, who was considered the favorite, in the intra-party races in Iowa and New Hampshire. It is also becoming apparent that she will also lose the vote in her home state of South Carolina this month.

Biden clearly won the Democratic primary
Meanwhile, the Democratic primary in Nevada also took place on Tuesday, in which President Joe Biden clearly prevailed with around 90 percent of the vote. The 81-year-old is practically certain to be the Democratic candidate in the presidential election on November 5 anyway, as he has no serious rivals.
