Hunt for Wagner
Ukrainian special forces operate in Sudan
Members of the Wagner mercenary group have been operating in Sudan for years. They were initially hired by former ruler Umar al-Bashir to protect him in the fight against the opposition. He was ultimately overthrown in 2019, but the Russian mercenaries remained in the country. They are now also likely to be involved in the recent fighting between the army and rebel militias, fighting on the side of the RSF militia against the government. Wagner now has a new enemy - Ukrainian special forces.
They are apparently hunting down Wagner mercenaries in the civil war country. There have been reports of attacks on the military company's bases for months. Ukrainian forces are suspected to be behind these attacks. Now a Ukrainian newspaper has published a video showing suspected Wagner fighters, who are tied up, being interrogated - by Ukrainian soldiers.
One of the handcuffed men speaks Russian and claims in the interrogation that he entered Sudan via the Central African Republic. His mission was to overthrow the local government. He is one of around 100 men, they say (see video above).
The "Kyiv Post" video also shows two Africans who have also been arrested. The newspaper assumes that the two were recruited locally. When asked how much their pay was, the two answer: 1000 US dollars.
Intelligence chief: "Russian war criminals are killing everywhere"
According to the medium, Ukraine's special forces have been operating in Sudan for several months. In May of last year, the head of the HUR military intelligence service, Kyrylo Budanov, announced: "We will kill Russian war criminals. No matter where they are." The operations in Sudan over the past few months would therefore fit the picture.
