"Means a lot"
William: Emotional words about Kate after the operation
Prince William is now attending public appointments again since his father's cancer diagnosis and Kate's abdominal surgery. At a gala dinner in London, he had his first words about King Charles' diagnosis and his wife Kate's operation.
Prince William attended his latest appointments under particularly emotional circumstances.
As patron of the London Air Ambulance, he attended the organization's so-called Black and White Gala on Wednesday evening and, according to the Daily Mail and others, spoke to the public for the first time since his father King Charles was diagnosed with cancer and his wife Kate underwent surgery.
William thanks everyone for their well wishes
On arrival, William addressed the photographers and journalists for the first time: "We really appreciate all the kind messages. Thank you very much," he said briefly and politely, before scurrying into the building to meet Hollywood stars such as Tom Cruise.
His father's diagnosis was also discussed there: Cruise and other guests sent their get-well wishes, for which William expressed his appreciation. The prince's tension was clearly visible, but he still managed to focus his visit on the organization and put the guests in a good mood.
Serious words about Charles and Kate
During the gala, the 41-year-old gave a speech - and, as expected, once again addressed the illness of his father King Charles and his wife's operation. "I would also like to take this opportunity to thank you for the kind messages of support for Catherine and my father, especially in the last few days. It means a great deal to us all," said Prince William.
Then he was even in a joking mood and quipped: "You could say that the last few weeks have been rather 'medical'. So I thought I'd come to an air ambulance event to get away from it all."
Difficult times for the royals
The visit to the London Air Ambulance Gala was one of the first public appointments William made this year. In January, the palace announced that the Princess of Wales had undergone abdominal surgery.
On Monday evening, the palace announced in an official statement that King Charles had been diagnosed with cancer. The disease was diagnosed during his recent hospital treatment for a benign enlargement of the prostate.
