Rejected by authorities
Putin opponent not allowed to run in election
Putin opponent Boris Nadezhdin is apparently not allowed to run in the presidential election in Russia in March - the candidacy of the critic of the war in Ukraine has been rejected, according to his own statements.
Nadezhdin declared on the short message service Telegram that he would appeal the decision of the Central Election Commission before the Russian Supreme Court.
Authorities criticized signature lists
The election commission justified its rejection by claiming that many of the signature lists required for a candidacy were incorrect. From a random sample of 60,000 signatures, the authorities declared 9,000 signatures invalid. The proportion of invalid signatures therefore amounted to 15 percent; a maximum of five percent would be permissible.
The liberal politician defended himself against the authority's accusation: "I do not agree with the electoral administration's decision," he explained. The signatures for him had been collected "openly and honestly".
The BBC and the independent Russian exile medium "Meduza" reported that the decision was not yet final - it was still a recommendation and not the formally final decision. Due to the formal error, however, it is assumed that the election commission's recommendation will be followed.
War opponent does not plan to give up annexed territories
Nadezhdin is considered a fierce critic of the war of invasion in Ukraine. He has announced that he wants to end the fighting in the office of president - but that the annexed territories should remain under Russian control. The presidential election is scheduled for March 15 to 17, 2024.
Putin's only serious rival
Nadezhdin would have been Putin's only potential rival: The liberal politician had become increasingly popular. Many of his supporters backed him in order to legally raise their voices against the war. In addition to the incumbent President Vladimir Putin, there are only three other candidates who either directly support the President or have no political profile of their own.
Putin even had the constitution amended in 2020 in order to be able to run again. According to the current version, he may also run for president one last time in 2030.
