Document affair
Documents affair: Biden will not be charged
The discovery of secret government documents in US President Joe Biden's private offices has no legal repercussions for the Democrat. Special investigator Robert Hur concludes in his report that "no criminal charges are warranted." However, he attests to the president's memory lapses.
For example, Biden is said to have been unable to remember the date of his son Beau's death from cancer in 2015. The politician is a "well-meaning older man with a poor memory" who is difficult to prove malicious intent, according to the report, which is more than 300 pages long. The investigation lasted 15 months and included interviews with 147 witnesses as well as a review of the millions of documents on Afghanistan that Biden had stored in his private rooms.
"No longer knew when he was Vice President"
Recordings of Biden's conversations with his ghostwriter for his book published in 2017 were also analyzed. According to the report, the president had difficulty remembering past events. "He didn't remember when he was vice president, forgot on the first day of the conversation when his term ended and forgot on the second day of the conversation when his term began." It would also be difficult to convince a jury that they should find Biden guilty of a crime, Hur said. After all, that would require "the mental state of willfulness."
Biden: Too busy for questioning
Biden denied the allegations, but objected that he should have paid better attention to how the documents were stored (see video above) "My memory is good," he asserted. He did not understand what the investigators had to do with his son's death from cancer.
Furthermore, he was questioned about the document affair shortly after the start of the war between Israel and the Islamist Palestinian organization Hamas on 7 October. At the time, he was busy dealing with an "international crisis".
My memory is good.
US-Präsident Joe Biden
Former US President Donald Trump, on the other hand, has to stand trial for his document affair. The Biden special investigator pointed out that Biden had voluntarily handed over the secret documents to the National Archives and had cooperated during the investigation. Trump had refused to return the documents "for many months" and, according to the indictment, "instructed third parties" to "destroy documents and then lie about it."
The Republicans criticized that double standards were being applied. Trump is likely to exploit the assessments of Biden's mental fitness for his own purposes. However, he keeps mixing up names himself.
