Attacks with missiles
Another attack on freighter off the coast of Yemen
A merchant ship was again attacked with missiles off the coast of Yemen in the Red Sea on Monday morning. According to the UK Maritime Trade Office (UKMTO), the incident took place around 40 nautical miles (74 kilometers) south of the port city of Mokka (al-Mukha).
According to the captain of the ship, the attack took place at around 4 a.m. local time. The ship was attacked by two rockets. The crew was unharmed and the freighter was on its way to the nearest port, it said.
Ships are advised to exercise caution when transiting the strait between the Red Sea and the Gulf of Aden and to report any suspicious activity, the UKMTO wrote on X (formerly Twitter, see post below).
"Shot at in two separate incidents"
Reuters news agency reported that British maritime security firm Ambrey said the Marshall Islands-flagged freighter had been "fired on with missiles in two separate incidents" and damaged in the process.
The Houthis, who control large parts of Yemen, have repeatedly attacked merchant ships in the Red Sea and the Gulf of Aden in recent months. One of the most important shipping routes for world trade runs along Yemen, through which freighters from the Indian Ocean reach the Mediterranean via the Suez Canal in Egypt.
Only at the weekend, the USA again attacked targets of the Iranian-backed Houthi militia in Yemen in order to prevent new attacks on ships in the Red Sea.
