Road blocked
Mikl-Leitner: Climate activists “congratulate” on her 60th birthday
In the run-up to the celebration to mark the 60th birthday of Lower Austria's Governor Johanna Mikl-Leitner (ÖVP), climate activists caused a road blockade in Klosterneuburg (Tulln district) on Monday morning. According to police spokesman Stefan Loidl, five people from the Last Generation got partially stuck (see video above). The rally on the B14 came to an end in the early afternoon
"We congratulate the Governor of Lower Austria with a street protest in Klosterneuburg to draw attention to her irresponsible climate policy. Please listen to the Climate Council!" wrote the Last Generation on X.
Climate campaigners take aim at the ÖVP
And added: "Because the common-sense climate protection demanded by the ÖVP would also mean economic common sense, they should at least consider the financial consequences of their inaction: warmer air stores more water vapor, which is why extreme weather events will increase."
However, the effectiveness of the protest action remained limited. The police were alerted at around 8.45 am. The officers who were deployed initially left the activists in place.
Bus traffic can pass
Public bus traffic can pass the blockade, police spokesman Johann Baumschlager said in the morning. Two of the activists had initially stuck to the road. Up to ten had come to Klosterneuburg by midday. The rally ultimately lasted until around 1.30 pm.
"It was to be expected that the climate chauvinists would stick to the heels of our governor even at her birthday party," reacted Matthias Zauner, regional manager of the Lower Austrian People's Party. After all, no one else would advocate tougher penalties against climate stickers as consistently as Mikl-Leitner, he added.
ÖVP outraged
Vienna's ÖVP regional party chairman Karl Mahrer was also outraged by the action: "The blockades in front of Mikl-Leitner's birthday party show how shameless the climate campaigners are. The Last Generation is not concerned with climate protection, but with provocation and sabotage."

Tougher action against climate stickers under consideration
According to him, Federal Chancellor Karl Nehammer's Austria Plan provides for the creation of new criminal offenses and tougher penalties in the road traffic regulations to prevent the obstruction of emergency vehicles. "The zero-tolerance policy for criminals and, above all, stricter consequences for climate offenders are an important building block," said Mahrer.
The birthday party for Mikl-Leitner will take place on Monday afternoon. Numerous guests from the worlds of politics, business, sport and culture are expected in Klosterneuburg.
Prominent well-wishers
Former Governor Erwin Pröll (ÖVP), former Federal President Heinz Fischer and Vienna's Mayor Michael Ludwig (both SPÖ), Upper Austria's Governor Thomas Stelzer (ÖVP) as well as his Burgenland counterpart Hans Peter Doskozil (SPÖ) and Bavaria's Minister of the Interior Joachim Herrmann (CSU) will be in attendance in Lower Austria's third-largest city.
"No coalition with Kickl, everything else open"
Even if her image has been tarnished since forming a coalition with Udo Landbauer, Johanna Mikl-Leitner is one of the few women in Austria who has been at the top of politics for more than 13 years. And apparently she does not see her cooperation with the FPÖ at state level as a model for the federal government. Because on Sunday, the ÖVP politician stated that there would be no cooperation with Herbert Kickl. "That is what is fixed. Everything else is open," said Mikl-Leitner.
