Hamas leader: Israel shows suspected hiding place
The talks between the USA, Egypt, Israel and Qatar on a ceasefire in the Gaza Strip have ended without results for the time being. Meanwhile, the Israeli army claims to have discovered a secret underground hideout of the leader of the Islamist group Hamas. Images of the suspected retreat have been published.
Jihia al-Sinwar lived with his family and Hamas fighters in a tunnel section under the southern city of Chan Junis while the war raged above them, Israeli army spokesman Daniel Hagari announced on Tuesday evening, releasing a short video of a tour of the suspected hideout.
Kitchen with supplies for a longer period of time
In it, an Israeli soldier shows a room in which al-Sinwar lived, including a safe full of banknotes in Israeli and US currency worth millions (see tweet above). The details of the video have not yet been independently verified. The complex also included toilets and showers, a kitchen where supplies for a long time would have been kept, as well as a room for bodyguards, including weapons and ammunition. "Everything was left here," says the soldier.
Army spokesman: "We will catch him"
Al-Sinwar and his men "ran away" when they heard that Israel's military was approaching, the short video continues. "We are determined to catch him and we will catch him," Hagari emphasized. The Israeli military released another short video showing Al-Sinwar and some of his relatives (see above).
The video was recorded on October 10 - three days after the start of the Gaza war - by a surveillance camera in one of Hamas' tunnels, according to reports. It allegedly shows the Hamas warlord "fleeing" with his wife and children. It is not known where al-Sinwar and his leadership are today. If the video recording is authentic, these would be the first images of him since the start of the war.
Ceasefire talks without result
Meanwhile, the "New York Times" reported that the ceasefire talks in Cairo had ended without result. However, the high-ranking representatives of Israel, the USA, Egypt and Qatar are said to have agreed to extend the talks by three days. They are now to be continued by officials at a lower level. Israel's delegation has already left.
