US border policy dispute enters the next round
In the US border policy dispute, the Republicans have initiated impeachment proceedings against Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas. By 214 votes to 213, a motion in the House of Representatives achieved a narrow majority on Tuesday. They accuse Mayorkas of "breach of public trust" and "willful and systematic refusal" to enforce immigration laws. Impeachment is unlikely due to a Democratic majority in the Senate.
It is the first impeachment proceeding against a US Secretary of State since 1876. "Next to a declaration of war, impeachment is arguably the most serious power of the House of Representatives, and we have handled this matter accordingly," said House Republican Leader Mike Johnson. "Since this Secretary refuses to do the job for which he was confirmed by the Senate, the House must act."
Biden speaks of "political games"
US President Joe Biden immediately reprimanded the Republicans. The Democrat spoke of a "blatant act of unconstitutional partisanship that targeted an honorable public servant to play petty political games".
"We will continue to look for real solutions to the challenges facing Americans, and Republicans in the House of Representatives must decide whether they want to join us in solving the problem or whether they want to continue playing politics with the border," the president continued.
Overall controversial approach
A week ago, a corresponding motion by the conservatives failed - a major defeat for the Republicans, who hold the majority in the House of Congress. The Democrats had condemned the Republicans' efforts to impeach Mayorkas as politically motivated.
The procedure was not uncontroversial among the Republicans either - several conservative MPs therefore voted against the so-called impeachment last Tuesday. Numerous legal experts are of the opinion that the conditions for impeachment proceedings against the minister responsible for border protection are not met.
