FPÖ invincible?
How Kickl acquired a taste for it
Premiere for Rainer Nowak's new discussion format "Der Rainer Nowak Talk". Former minister Maria Rauch-Kallat (ÖVP), "Krone" political expert Ida Metzger and PR consultant Josef Kalina discussed the topic of the super election year in its first edition.
The panel agreed on one assessment: the FPÖ and its party leader Herbert Kickl will probably not be able to take first place in the National Council elections. Although everything can always turn out differently than expected in Austrian domestic politics, such a large gap between the FPÖ in first place and the two former major parties ÖVP and SPÖ in second and third place can hardly be made up in a few months, stated strategy consultant and former SPÖ Federal Managing Director Joe Kalina: "It is hardly possible that the FPÖ will not emerge from this National Council election in first place."
Kalina does not believe in a blue-red coalition without Kickl, as suggested by Burgenland's governor Hans Peter Doskozil (SPÖ): "That would tear the party apart," says the pollster.
Corona policy and its consequences
Corona policy played a central role in researching the causes of the current situation. Former Health Minister Maria Rauch-Kallat admitted that she had been glad not to have been in charge in her old job at the time. She asked for understanding for the mistakes and problems of the turquoise-green government in the face of the pandemic: never before had a government been confronted with such challenges.
When Kickl left the engine room
Mistakes were made, for example when announcing and deciding on compulsory vaccination. "Krone" domestic policy chief Ida Metzger countered that parts of the population had not only been offended by the mandatory vaccination, but also by a much longer lockdown for the unvaccinated. Metzger sees Kickl's rise in direct connection with coronavirus: "He used to be the man in the engine room. He made his first really public appearances at the coronavirus demonstrations and received a lot of encouragement." This is how Kickl acquired a taste for being in the front row, which continues to this day.
