After the Kansas City Chiefs' victory parade following their fourth Super Bowl title, one person was fatally injured by gunfire and 15 others suffered life-threatening wounds. This was announced by a spokesman for the fire department on Wednesday (local time). Police believe that a total of up to 21 people were injured, including eleven children and teenagers. Three people have been arrested following the incident in Kansas City. There was initially no information on the motive.

All players, coaches and employees of the Kansas City Chiefs are safe, said the mayor of Kansas City, Quinton Lucas. US President Joe Biden had been informed of the incident, the White House announced. According to official reports, the shots were fired near the train station close to a parking garage. It was unclear whether the crime was connected to the victory parade. TV footage showed the event grounds being evacuated.

"The investigation has only just begun. And we are working to clear all surrounding areas and businesses," said police chief Stacey Graves at a press conference. She did not give details of the suspects arrested. The police assume that there are no children among the injured.

Mahomes: "I'm praying for Kansas City"
Players and coaches were traveling along a 3.22-kilometer route on a red double-decker bus. With many schools closed for the day, there were plenty of children among the fans. "I'm praying for Kansas City," star quarterback Patrick Mahomes of the Kansas City Chiefs wrote on X (formerly Twitter). The NFL issued a statement expressing its deepest sorrow over the senseless violence. "Our thoughts are with the victims and all those affected."

The Kansas City Chiefs had defeated the San Francisco 49ers 25-22 after overtime in a thrilling National Football League (NFL) final in Las Vegas on Sunday. The Chiefs had previously won the Vince Lombardi Trophy in 1970, 2020 and 2023.

Swift not taking part, according to reports
Pop superstar Taylor Swift did not accompany her boyfriend Travis Kelce to the parade, according to media reports. The singer had made headlines in the run-up to the Super Bowl because she had traveled from Tokyo especially for the game. Swift's next performance is in Melbourne on Friday evening and she has already traveled to Australia.
