Is "predictable"
Putin: Biden as election winner “better for Russia”
While Donald Trump was seen as the Kremlin's preferred candidate in recent elections, Russian President Vladimir Putin has now made people sit up and take notice with another preferred candidate. He currently sees the current US President Joe Biden as "predictable" - a Biden victory is therefore the best possible outcome for Russia.
In an interview for Russian television, excerpts of which were published in advance by the Kremlin on Wednesday, Putin criticized the US government: "I think that the attitude of the current administration is extremely harmful and wrong." Nevertheless, a Biden victory would be preferable, Putin said.
Not capable of acting? "Haven't seen anything like that"
"He's the more experienced one, he's predictable, he's an old-school politician." However, Russia will work with any president the people of the United States elect, he said. Putin (71) also defended the 81-year-old Biden against suggestions that he was no longer healthy enough for his office. At a summit meeting in Switzerland in 2021, it had already been said that Biden was no longer fit to act, Putin said. "I have seen nothing of the sort."
Europeans' stance "illogical"
Putin's comments do not quite fit in with Russia's policy in recent years, which has backed Republican Donald Trump. Trump prides himself on his allegedly good relationship with Putin. In the interview, the Kremlin leader addressed Trump's much-criticized statement that he would not grant American support to NATO allies with low defence spending in the event of a Russian attack.
Trump has his own view of how the relationship between the USA and its allies should develop, said Putin. The only illogical thing about this is the attitude of the Europeans: "They want the USA to continue to protect them for nothing".
Side blow to German Foreign Minister
Putin also criticized German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock. The Green politician is not only hostile towards Russia. "She is also hostile towards her own country," he said, referring to the Greens' energy policy. The Greens were stoking people's fear of climate change. But if they had come to power thanks to this fear, they were pursuing a completely different policy: in Germany, more energy was now being generated from coal, said Putin.
