Costs too high!
USA wants to get rid of confiscated Russian yacht
When the oligarch superyacht Amadea was seized in 2022, the US Department of Justice proclaimed: "Russian oligarchs can't hide even in the remotest corner of the world." However, the US authorities now want to get rid of the 106-metre luxury ship as quickly as possible. The monthly costs of maintaining the yacht are simply too high.
The Amadea has six decks and a helipad and costs around 300 million euros. The seizure by the US authorities was a consequence of the sanctions against Russia and Russian oligarchs. Among the sanctioned businessmen is 57-year-old Suleiman Kerimov, who is said to have close ties to Kremlin leader Vladimir Putin and Chechen ruler Ramzan Kadyrov.
However, the ownership of the Amadea has apparently not yet been fully clarified. Russian billionaire Eduard Khudainatov has been fighting for the yacht for months. He claims to be the rightful owner and is demanding that the USA hand over the ship. Khudainatov, the former managing director of the state-owned gas company Rosneft, is not currently on any sanctions list.
US government wants to auction yacht
Khudainatov, who the US sees merely as a "front man" to conceal the true ownership, is using legal means to prevent the Amadea from being released for auction. A court in New York is responsible. But time is pressing for the US government. It wants to get rid of the expensive ship as quickly as possible.
Horrendous monthly costs
Court documents recently quoted by the Bloomberg news agency show that US taxpayers have to shell out around 560,000 euros a month for the crew and maintenance of the Amadea.
