Alderwoman biased?
Trial against Maddie suspect adjourned
Day one of the trial against Christian B., the main suspect in the Maddie McCann missing persons case, for other sexual offenses lasted just nine minutes (see video above). It was then adjourned at Braunschweig Regional Court (Germany).
Reason: defense lawyer Friedrich Fülscher considers one of the jurors to be biased. She had called for the killing of Brazilian ex-president Bolsonaro online in 2019. "We do not tolerate incitement to murder and manslaughter," the public prosecutor agreed with the motion. The accused himself appeared tense in court and did not comment.
Christian B. has been in the German justice system for a long time, he has a criminal record for sexual offenses against children and has served several prison sentences over the course of his life. Most recently, the Braunschweig Regional Court sentenced him to seven years in prison for the rape of a 72-year-old US tourist in Portugal, which he is currently serving.
In solitary confinement for two years
According to lawyer Friedrich Fülscher, Christian B. has been in solitary confinement for almost two years, and the accusations and the great public interest are putting him under extreme psychological strain. "I think we have seen a very scarred person," the lawyer said about the accused in court.
According to German investigators, B. used to visit the Algarve in Portugal regularly and took on odd jobs there. He also broke into hotels and vacation resorts. He is also alleged to have committed sex crimes. According to the indictment, the suspect raped three women and sexually abused two girls on a beach and in a playground. The acts are said to have taken place between 2000 and 2017.
Not all victims identified
The indictment is based in part on videos that B. recorded himself. Not all victims have been identified. In the case of Maddie McCann, who disappeared from a vacation apartment in 2007, he is even suspected of murder. Despite large-scale searches and numerous appeals, the case was never solved and the British girl was never found.
The trial for other sex crimes against the 47-year-old is due to continue next Friday - with a new lay judge.
