Needs money urgently
Trump sells golden sneakers – for 399 dollars
One day after his defeat in the fraud trial, Donald Trump made a surprise appearance at the "Sneaker con" trade fair in Philadelphia. The ex-president is now selling golden sneakers - a real "collector's item".
Fashionable restraint? That's not for Trump. Because his high-top sneakers not only shine in gold, but are also characterized by a red sole, a US flag on the shaft and the letter T on the side. The name of the Trump model: "Never Surrender High-Tops".
"Collector's item" for 399 dollars
Rumor has it that the presidential candidate probably wants to reach a younger electorate with his sneakers. But will the young Republicans be able or willing to afford his golden model? After all, at 399 US dollars (around 370 euros), it's not exactly a bargain.
According to the website on which the Trump sneakers are sold, however, this proud price secures a "true collector's item" that is "bold, golden and robust, just like President Trump".
They are also "a rallying cry in the form of shoes", it continues: "Lace them up and step out ready to conquer."
High fine threatens Trump's cash reserves
Trump also urgently needs money. Because following a harsh ruling in the fraud trial, the ex-president must now raise more than 350 million dollars within 30 days. The New York judge's ruling, which also attacks Trump's identity as a successful businessman, also demands that the 77-year-old real estate entrepreneur is not allowed to run a company in the state of New York for three years.
His sons Eric and Donald Jr. must each pay a fine of around four million dollars and are not allowed to run a company in New York state for two years, according to a 92-page order published by Judge Arthur Engoron on Friday.
"Complete lack of remorse"
"The complete lack of remorse and insight on their part is almost sickening," Judge Engoron wrote in the order, referring to Trump and his sons. The New York Times commented that the ruling was a "crushing defeat" for Trump. The fine of 355 million dollars (329 million euros) could "wipe out his entire cash stash".
Trump's lawyers have announced their intention to appeal. Nevertheless, according to media reports, the ex-president must either deposit the money or a kind of pledge through a third-party company within 30 days. According to the New York Times, the total sum plus interest amounts to around 450 million dollars. However, neither he nor his Trump Organization are threatened with bankruptcy.
"Witch hunt"
The order is a "complete and total hypocrisy" and the whole process is part of a "witch hunt" against him ordered by his successor Joe Biden, the Republican railed. Political convictions and the venue of the trial, not the facts, had determined the outcome of the trial, criticized his son Donald Trump Jr. on the online platform X, formerly Twitter. The metropolis of New York is considered liberal and usually votes predominantly Democratic.
New York's Attorney General Letitia James celebrated the decision as a "huge victory" "Justice has been served today. This is a huge victory for this state, for this country and for everyone who believes that we must all abide by the same rules - including ex-presidents." James had originally called for an even harsher sentence. Among other things, she had wanted to ban Trump for life from running a business in the state of New York.
The civil case was about the future of the 77-year-old's business empire. The public prosecutor accused Trump, his sons and employees of manipulating the value of the Trump Organization for years in order to obtain cheaper loans and insurance contracts. Judge Engoron had already confirmed this before the trial. The trial, which began in October and ended in mid-January, was therefore primarily concerned with determining possible penalties and other charges. Both Trump himself and several of his children were questioned during the trial.
First criminal trial against ex-president
There was no threat of a prison sentence or direct consequences for Trump's bid for the presidency in the civil trial. However, the ex-president is currently involved in a number of other proceedings. It was only on Thursday that a judge confirmed the start of a trial in connection with hush money payments to a porn star on March 25. It would be the first criminal trial against a former president in the history of the USA.
Three further criminal trials are in preparation, including on charges of attempted election manipulation. Civil proceedings are also ongoing.
At the end of January, a jury in a defamation case against 80-year-old author E. Jean Carroll a compensation payment of 83.3 million dollars. Trump's lawyers had also announced their intention to appeal in this case.
The 77-year-old Trump is considered to be the Republicans' most promising candidate in the upcoming presidential election in November. He has often used his trials as campaign rallies, which has already led to disputes with several judges.
