"Last generation"
“Everyman” protesters did not accept fines
A climate protest by the "Last Generation" was the subject of a hearing at the Provincial Administrative Court on Tuesday. The activists disrupted the premiere of "Jedermann" at the Salzburg Festival last July. They were fined, against which they lodged an appeal.
A protest by the "Last Generation" at the 2023 Salzburg Festival was brought before the Provincial Administrative Court on Tuesday. Two men and a woman had lodged an appeal against fines they received in the course of their disruptive action on stage at the premiere of "Jedermann" in July. The provincial administrative court did not make a decision on Tuesday. It should be issued in writing "shortly", it said.
Last year, "Jedermann" did not celebrate its premiere on Domplatz, but in the Grosses Festspielhaus. After an hour, when Jedermann and the Buhlschaft kissed, the trio rose from their seats and tried to storm the stage. "The agreed signal was the kiss between Jedermann and Buhlschaft," said one of the most active members on Tuesday. The trio, a student (22), a teacher (34) and a social education worker (26) are from Graz and the surrounding area. "The aim would have been to carry our protest from the stage into the audience," said the student.
Security staff and two plainclothes police officers were able to stop the climate activists after a few meters. They then began to loudly chant slogans about climate change for a few seconds: "Listen to the Climate Council" or "We are all the last generation before the tipping points". The men were wearing high-visibility vests under their festival costumes. All three were quickly escorted out of the hall. The three Styrians were subsequently fined 440 euros each for disturbing public order and causing a disturbance. They lodged an appeal against this.
