Too few jets
Flying will be 10% more expensive again this summer
Ticket prices are likely to rise because airlines are not getting enough of the jets they have ordered due to technical problems at Boeing and Airbus and the desire to travel is high, estimates Ryanair boss Michael O'Leary. Nevertheless, the Irish low-cost airline is stepping on the gas in Vienna and expanding its services.
Flying away in the summer is likely to become around ten percent more expensive, estimates Ryanair boss Michael O'Leary. Depending on how the price of kerosene develops, the increase could be higher or lower. The reason for this is that Boeing is currently only able to deliver a small number of the 737 Max and Airbus the 320neo due to technical problems. However, the airlines had ordered many more jets and have already adjusted their flight schedules accordingly. At the same time, demand for travel is continuing to rise significantly. According to O'Leary, the airline is already well booked into June.
The Irish are therefore increasing their offer from Vienna by four (Rijeka, Split, Tirana, Olbia) to 84 destinations. Tickets are available from 24.99 euros at the start. The number of passengers is also expected to climb again by 15% to 7 million. This would be an increase of as much as 160% compared to 2019. Even more would be possible if the airport were to reduce its charges. Vienna is one of the ten most expensive airports in Europe. The other two domestic airports, Salzburg and Klagenfurt, recently contributed a total of 300,000 passengers for Ryanair.
Nevertheless, the low-cost airline is earning well. The average revenue per ticket is 45 euros, plus 20 euros for baggage fees, seat reservations etc.. However, the airline's own costs only amount to 31 euros per seat. In comparison, Wizzair comes to 47 euros per passenger, Lufthansa to 167 euros, calculates Andreas Gruber, Head of Ryanair Austria.
