Due to car breakdown
Driver dies after crash with truck
A tragic chain of circumstances led to the death of a 66-year-old driver in a tunnel on the A9 Pyhrnautobahn. A truck had hit the small car, which was in the right-hand lane due to a breakdown. The Styrian driver had no chance, he died at the scene of the accident.
At around half past five in the morning, a fatal traffic accident occurred on the A9 Pyhrnautobahn in the direction of Linz. As the police have now confirmed, video footage showed that the man from Graz had already entered the Kienberg tunnel with his hazard warning lights switched on.
Crash after just 20 seconds
About 100 meters after entering the tunnel, the Chevrolet Kalos came to a standstill in the right-hand lane, presumably due to a technical fault. Only around 20 seconds later, disaster struck: a Turkish truck crashed into the rear of the stationary small car without braking.
Closed in the direction of Linz
The Chevrolet was badly damaged and there was no hope for the 66-year-old man from Graz. The 27-year-old truck driver was questioned by the police. The Red Cross was on the scene with two ambulances and an emergency doctor, and the police and fire department were also deployed. The road towards Linz was closed for around four hours, the truck driver was uninjured.
