Navalny’s widow shares picture with grieving daughter
Following the death of Kremlin critic Alexei Navalny in the "Polar Wolf" prison camp in Russia's far north, his wife has now published the first joint picture with their grieving daughter Darya. Meanwhile, former head of state Dmitry Medvedev insinuates that the widow is not really depressed at all.
"My sweet little girl. I flew to you to hug and support you, but you are sitting there supporting me," wrote Yulia Navalnya in a post published on Instagram on Thursday.
"You are so strong, so brave and steadfast. We can handle anything, my heart. How good that you are by my side. I love you." Navalny, who has a 15-year-old son as well as 23-year-old Darya, died on Friday in a penal camp in the polar region.
In the past, Darya Navalny had repeatedly made political demands for the release of her imprisoned father and had also given speeches in his honor at award ceremonies. She is studying at Stanford University in the USA.
Navalnaya wants to continue her husband's work
Navalny's widow did not immediately travel to see her children on Friday, but first blamed Kremlin leader Vladimir Putin for her husband's fate in front of the world at the Munich Security Conference.
On Monday, she was a guest in Brussels at the meeting of EU foreign ministers and also published a video with a challenge to Putin. She said she wanted to continue her husband's work. Alexei Navalny, for example, had denounced corruption in the Russian power apparatus and publicly called Putin a murderer.
Slander by the Kremlin
Meanwhile, Russia's ex-President Dmitry Medvedev has verbally attacked the dead man and his widow in an interview he published on his Telegram channel. He could not say anything good about Navalny, he first explained, before going on to attack Navalnaya. "Look at the smiling, happy face of Navalny's widow: It seems as if she has been waiting all these years to start her political career," he claimed in defiance of the many pictures showing Navalny's grief. Navalny's team responded to Medvedev's slander with the comment: "Scumbag. Lousy scumbag".
Navalny said on Twitter-X that Medvedev was "a zero" and that she did not need to be protected from him. The Kremlin would deliberately "foist" this idiot in order to attract attention. It is much more important to write about the fact that Putin killed Navalny. "Write that every day. As much as you can," the widow asked.
According to the authorities, Navalny died on February 16 in the prison camp with the unofficial name "Polar Wolf" in the Siberian Arctic region of Yamal. The politician, weakened by a poison attack in 2020 and repeated solitary confinement in the camp, is said to have collapsed during a tour of the icy prison yard and died despite resuscitation attempts. He was 47 years old at the time of his death. The cause of death is unclear.
