At St. Stephen's Square
5000 candles in solidarity for Ukrainian children
At around 5 p.m. on Thursday, hundreds of people gathered on St. Stephen's Square in Vienna - for a sea of lights in solidarity with Ukrainian children. The rally was held under the motto "728 days of war in Ukraine".
5000 candles arranged in the shape of hearts were lit on St. Stephen's Square at 5 pm. A sea of lights in solidarity for the children in Ukraine. Saturday marks the second anniversary of the Russian war of aggression in Ukraine.
It is difficult to say how many people took part in the event due to the fluctuation. A rough estimate by police officers put the number at 300.
Currently, 17.6 million people in Ukraine are dependent on humanitarian aid.
Klaus Schwertner, Caritas-Direktor
Klaus Schwertner, head of Caritas, was also on site and described the role of Caritas in the war zone. He himself had been there at the end of the previous year and had spoken to those affected. "Currently, 17.6 million people in Ukraine are dependent on humanitarian aid. That is a dramatic figure," said Schwertner.
Ukrainians in the war zone are dependent on food distributions and hygiene packages every day. It is mainly elderly people and families with children who would be found at the Caritas distribution points. "As Caritas, we try to support the particularly vulnerable groups," says the Caritas boss.
Four million people reached
Despite all the drama, there is also good news: "So far, four million people have already been reached through the Caritas network alone and thanks to donations from Austria. This aid gives us some hope in these difficult days." 500 tons of relief supplies from Caritas Austria have been delivered to Ukraine since the outbreak of war.
Attacks in Ukraine have increased again in recent days. To date, there have been more than 37,000 air alerts. At best, this is psychological terror, but at worst it means destruction, injuries, deaths, pain and suffering, as Schwertner says.
