French Oscars
Honorary César for cult director Christopher Nolan
British-American director Christopher Nolan received the honorary César at the French film awards on Friday evening. This was an incredible honor for him, he said. He had always been impressed by France's love of cinema. His wife Emma Thomas, producer of many of his films, was also present at the award ceremony.
The 49th César ceremony took place in the legendary Olympia concert hall in Paris. Another honorary César was presented to French actress and filmmaker Agnès Jaoui, who has won the most César awards to date with six trophies.
The presentation of the French film awards took place against the backdrop of new MeToo scandals. At the beginning of February, actress Judith Godrèche ("A Woman of 15") filed a lawsuit against directors Benoît Jacquot ("Diary of a Chambermaid") and Jacques Doillon ("Young Werther") for sexual abuse of minors. The incidents are said to have taken place between 1986 and 1992.
The 51-year-old took the floor at the César Gala. In a moving speech, she warned against the excesses of cinema, an art that would sometimes cover up the "illegal" trafficking of young girls, as she said. It was only at the beginning of the year that France was rocked by misogynistic comments and recent claims of sexual assault against Gérard Depardieu.
Sandra Hüller wins best actress
Another big winner of the evening was the judicial drama "Anatomy of a Case", which triumphed at the French César film awards on Friday evening. The film by French director Justine Triet took home a total of six prizes, including Best Director.
German actress Sandra Hüller won the award for best actress for her performance in the film about a German writer suspected of murdering her husband. She felt very honored, especially as a German, said Hüller at the award ceremony in Paris on Friday.
The César - named after the sculptor César Baldaccini - is the French version of the Oscars. It has been awarded since 1976.
