Professions with a future
Apprentices are satisfied with company training
What do apprentices think about their training? Why did they choose an apprenticeship and what do they want in the future? Together with a market research institute, the Lower Austrian Chamber of Commerce asked these questions.
There is a shortage of skilled workers and companies are desperately looking for apprentices. Regular surveys are important to get young people interested in an apprenticeship. In order to find out more about the wishes and expectations of apprentices in Lower Austria, the Lower Austrian Chamber of Commerce conducted an online survey together with the market research institute Dr. Angerer Marketing Research & Consulting, in which 5679 - i.e. a third of all apprentices in the province - took part. The data relates to the period from 8.1.2024 to 12.2.2024.
The result: 95% are satisfied with their apprenticeship at the company. The fun factor in the practical work (69%) and their own salary (64%) are reasons for doing an apprenticeship. In addition, 40 percent of those surveyed stated that they had good promotion and career opportunities as a result of their apprenticeship.
Influence of personal environment
The study also shows that parents are still the most important source of support when it comes to choosing a career. Information about the training company (e.g. from the internet) and reports from the private environment are also relevant. Most apprenticeships were found through private contacts such as parents, friends or acquaintances (55%), while social media plays an extremely minor role with only 5%.
87% agree with the statement that the respective apprenticeship is a future-oriented profession. However, the topic of sustainability is also becoming increasingly important: "56% of respondents say that their apprenticeship is a green job, as their profession is particularly concerned with sustainability, the environment and energy," says WKNÖ President Wolfgang Ecker.
Skills Week: discovering talents and skills
The Chamber of Commerce wants to improve the image of apprenticeships in society with targeted measures. "It is often difficult for young people in particular to decide on a suitable apprenticeship or further training course given the wide range of options available. It is therefore important to recognize one's own talents and abilities early on and thus find the right school education or apprenticeship," explains Ecker.
The Austria-wide Skills Week from March 4 to 10 offers an insight into the diverse world of professions. Under the motto "Show what you've got!", interested people can experience professions, try out skills, discover talents, explore companies or even meet skills heroes.
