German Bundesliga
Conference with Dortmund & Leipzig from 3.30 pm LIVE
Important success for RB Leipzig in the battle for Champions League qualification: The "Bulls" claimed a 4:1 victory at VfL Bochum on Saturday on matchday 24 of Germany's Bundesliga! They secured their treble thanks to a three-pointer between the 68th and 72nd minute of the game. However, it was not enough to move up to fourth place in the table, as rivals Borussia Dortmund were also able to secure a win at Union Berlin and remain one point ahead of the East Germans.
Dortmund and coach Edin Terzic were largely satisfied with a brief spell of pressure before half-time after a turbulent week. Otherwise, many of the problems of recent weeks were evident. Karim Adeyemi put the visitors ahead (41'), Ian Maatsen made sure of the decision shortly before the end (90'). Marcel Sabitzer played through for BVB, while Christopher Trimmel came on for Union in the final minute (69).
Leipzig win thanks to a brace in four minutes!
Leipzig, meanwhile, took heart from their difficult Champions League clash with Real Madrid. After a poor start to the year so far, the visitors lived up to their role as favorites. Dani Olmo (30'), Lois Openda (68'), Ivan Ordets (own goal/71') and Yussuf Poulsen (72') secured a deserved victory for the visitors, who were without the suspended Xaver Schlager but with Nicolas Seiwald and Christoph Baumgartner (until 65'). The home side relied on Kevin Stöger for the entire match.
Eintracht Frankfurt, meanwhile, halted the downward trend under coach Dino Toppmöller and recorded another victory after six games without a win. In taking a curious lead at FC Heidenheim, Frankfurt benefited from a bump in the pitch when goalkeeper Kevin Müller allowed a back pass from Benedikt Gimber to pass (39'). The keeper struck under the ball as it bounced over a bump. After the break, Niels Nkounkou added to his tally (49') before substitute Marvin Pieringer reduced the deficit for FCH after just under an hour.
Augsburg overruns bottom club Darmstadt
FC Augsburg had their fun on the road against SV Darmstadt, who were completely indisposed defensively. The hosts, for whom Emir Karic played through, endured a dreadful first half-hour. Phillip Tietz (1st), Fredrik Jensen (12th), Ermedin Demirovic twice (20th and 29th) and Ruben Vargas (24th) punished the Lilies' many mistakes with ice-cold penalties. Tietz also scored the final goal (84'). According to data provider Opta, it was the third-fastest 5-0 lead in Bundesliga history. Only Freiburg's 6-0 win at Gladbach in 2021 and Borussia's 10-0 win over Eintracht Braunschweig in 1984 were even quicker.
Phillipp Mwene and Karim Onisiwo's Mainz 05, who are bottom of the table, had to settle for a 1:1 (1:0) draw against Borussia Mönchengladbach. The hope of pushing 1. FC Köln out of the relegation places in the relegation battle had to be at least postponed.
