Fatal shots fired into crowd
Israeli army: soldiers felt “threatened”
Following the fatal shots fired at Palestinians, Israel's army has now taken a stand. The shots were fired by soldiers who felt "threatened". There is said to have been a crowd in the city of Gaza (see video above).
Thousands of people are said to have gathered around a convoy of 30 aid trucks. There were dozens of dead and injured, some of whom were run over by trucks. A representative of the Israeli army admitted that a "limited" number of shots had been fired. The Hamas Ministry of Health, on the other hand, spoke of a "massacre" in which 104 people were killed and more than 750 others injured.
"It's not like shooting into the sky to hold people back when there was confusion and chaos. There was deliberate targeting and killing," criticized Palestinian UN Ambassador Riad Mansur.
Independent investigation?
Following the reports of the deaths of dozens of people, several states and institutions have reacted with concern. "I firmly believe that we need a humanitarian ceasefire and the unconditional and immediate release of hostages, and that we should have a Security Council capable of achieving these goals," said UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres. An independent investigation would be a matter of urgency.
French President Emmanuel Macron also called for an immediate ceasefire. "In any case, it is Israel's responsibility to abide by the rules of international law and to protect the distribution of humanitarian aid to the civilian population." EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs Josep Borrell spoke of a "bloodbath". Depriving people of food aid is "a serious violation" of international humanitarian law.
More than 30,000 dead since October
The war in the Middle East began with Hamas' major attack on Israel on October 7. Around 1160 people were killed and 250 others were taken hostage in the Gaza Strip. Since then, the Israeli army has taken massive military action in the Gaza Strip. More than 30,000 Palestinians are said to have lost their lives.
