Cancellation! Benjamin Karl wins the overall World Cup
Benjamin Karl is the winner of the 2023/24 Overall Parallel World Cup! The early decision in favor of the Olympic champion from Beijing was made due to the cancellation of the World Cup final in Berchtesgaden (GER), which had been scheduled for March 16 and 17. "I'm riding with a board brand that is still fairly new to the World Cup. Despite many doubters, we went through with the project," says a delighted Karl.
After the postponement of the Berchtesgaden races to Winterberg (GER), where the snowboarding season will now be concluded on March 9 and 10 with an individual and a mixed team competition, the big crystal globe is now out of Karl's reach with a 116-point lead over Italy's Daniele Bagozza.
13 years after his last success to date, Karl has won the overall World Cup for the fourth time. The five-time world champion has also won the parallel giant slalom classification this season and has now won four major and five minor crystals.
"I sacrificed the entire past season to develop the boards in order to achieve the goal of winning the overall World Cup. I'm riding with a board brand that is still fairly new to the World Cup. Despite many doubters, we went through with the project and it's wonderful that it worked out so well," says Karl.
Prommegger/Schöffmann win the mixed team World Cup
Andreas Prommegger and Sabine Schöffmann can also celebrate winning the small World Cup globe in the mixed team competition. Before the final race, the red-white-red duo, who have won in Bad Gastein and on the Simonhöhe this season, have a cushion of 91 points over the Italian pairing of Daniele Bagozza and Lucia Dalmasso. As Prommegger/Schöffmann will finish at least around tenth place at the season finale in Winterberg thanks to the "race arithmetic", they are also guaranteed victory in the team standings.
