Sensation in Glasgow
Gogl-Walli storms into the semi-finals with ÖLV record
A fantastic morning for Austria's track and field athletes at the start of the World Indoor Championships in Glasgow! Verena Mayr is in a great fourth place after three events in the pentathlon. Susanne Gogl-Walli with a super record of 51.43 over 400 m and Markus Fuchs with 6.66 over 60 m both reached the semifinals.
The "Krone" reports from Glasgow
Verena Mayr got off to a sensational start in the pentathlon on her comeback to the world athletics stage. She finished third in her heat of the 60 m hurdles in a new season's best time of 8.47. Five years ago, the Upper Austrian achieved her personal best time of 8.38 in the Emirates Arena and finished an excellent sixth in the pentathlon at the European Indoor Championships.
1.76 meters high
She then mastered an excellent 1.76 m in the high jump on her third attempt. Her best performance is 1.80 m. She then followed this up with 13.83 m in the shot put. She now has 2735 points. Only Saga Vinnenen (Fin/2883), defending champion Noor Vidts (Bel/2845) and Chari Hawkins (USA/2773) are currently ahead of her. "I'm very happy with the hurdles and the high jump, which were both season's best performances, but my nerves didn't quite play ball in the shot put," said Verena Mayr.
Fuchs with a nail-biter
Markus Fuchs came fourth in his preliminary heat with 6.66 seconds, only the top three went straight through to the semi-finals. But he still just managed to qualify for the round of the last 24. The semi-final will take place at 20:45 (CEST). "A good time is still possible, although the. track really isn't super fast!" said Austria's fastest man.
Gogl-Walli creates a sensation
Susanne Gogl-Walli got things off to a sensational start for the ÖLV. She finished second overall in all four heats in the 400m and set a new ÖLV record of 51.43 seconds to reach the semi-finals of the twelve best on Friday evening.
"I really didn't expect such a time, simply unbelievable," said Susanne Gogl-Walli in amazement after improving her Austrian record (51.73), which she set last year in fourth place at the European Indoor Championships in Istanbul, by three tenths. In her heat, she finished a great second in 51.43 behind relay world champion Lieke Klaver (Hol/51.31). She even advanced to the semifinals at 21.50 (CEST) in second place (!) in the overall ranking of the heats. World record holder Femke Bol (Hol) finished fifth overall with 52.00.
Always in top form at the right time
Susanne Walli left it open for the time being whether she can run such a time again in the semi-final, she moaned (for fun): "Now I have to run again!" Gogl-Walli's coach Wolfi Adler had watched the preliminary heat in the press gallery and also cheered without bounds. He probably hadn't expected the record either. In any case, a huge compliment to the coach. He has been getting Susi Gogl-Walli in top form at major events for years!
A look at the statistics shows just how strong this 51.43 is. Even outdoors, Susanne Gogl-Walli has only run four times faster! Her 50.87 from Székesfehérvár on July 18, 2023 is at the top of the list.
