Because his much younger wife was dealing cannabis from the apartment they shared, an 80-year-old Viennese man now also has to stand trial. He is accused of possessing over a kilo of narcotics. He has clear words for his wife: "I told her she was a fool."

Supported by his wife, an 80-year-old man takes his seat in the dock. He and his wife are on trial for drug addiction, something you don't see every day in Vienna's provincial court: The 55-year-old is alleged to have sold cannabis from the apartment they shared in the 10th district.

"It's clear that I can't score points here with youthful recklessness," says lawyer Mirsad Musliu, ruling out the defense strategy so often used in drug trials. Nevertheless, the big dangerous drug dealers would not be sitting in front of the judge here. Although one and a half kilos of cannabis and over 26,000 euros were seized in the couple's apartment, the motivation behind the sale was: "So that I can finance my own needs" - admits the younger woman.

It is not always an advantage if the woman is much younger. You can't stop her from doing such nonsense.

The 80-year-old would have nothing to do with it at all. "Well, haven't you seen the packets of drugs in the living room? Did you ever ask your wife about it?" Mr. Rat follows up - "Yes, I said she's a fool." He didn't even know that his wife had ten to 15 customers. He gets off with a diversion. 

Conditional prison sentence for wife
The 55-year-old woman was not sentenced to six months' conditional imprisonment for the commercial sale of narcotics. According to the judge, the personal use charge would not work. The couple's defense lawyer, Mirsad Musliu, adds: "It's not always an advantage if the woman is much younger. You can't stop her from doing such nonsense."
