Shots fired into crowd
Israeli army announces investigation into incident
On Thursday, the arrival of aid convoys in the Gaza Strip was met with riots and gunfire by Israeli soldiers. According to Hamas, more than 100 people were killed and more than 700 injured. An Israeli army spokesman has now announced that the incident will be thoroughly investigated.
The military had seized all evidence in order to clarify the facts, army spokesman Daniel Hagar said on Saturday. The results are also to be presented. "The claim that we deliberately attacked the convoy and deliberately harmed people has no basis." He was referring to the statement by the Palestinian side. Although shots had been fired, there had only been a few casualties. The chaos and crowds were responsible for the deaths.
United Nations warns of starvation
Representatives of the United Nations recently warned that thousands of civilians in the Gaza Strip could die of starvation. Israel's Prime Minister is restricting humanitarian aid. As reported , aid from the USA, Egypt and Jordan was recently airdropped. The communications director of the National Security Council, John Kirby, pointed out that it was "extremely difficult" to carry out a drop in an area as densely populated as the Gaza Strip. The aim was to get as close as possible to those in need, but not in such a way that they would be in danger.
Nevertheless, further missions of this kind are said to be planned. It was also announced on Saturday evening that the framework for a six-week ceasefire had been agreed. "The deal is basically already there. But I don't want to raise expectations one way or the other," said a US representative. Humanitarian aid for the civilian population is a recurring point of conflict between Israel's government and international aid organizations.
