In Missouri and Idaho
Trump continues his victory march in the primaries
Donald Trump has continued his victory march in his party's US presidential primaries. As expected, the ex-president and Republican candidate for president won the party's internal votes in the states of Missouri and Idaho on Saturday (local time).
The Republican Party in Missouri officially declared Trump the winner after all votes had been counted on Saturday evening (local time) and announced that the 77-year-old had won every single district in the state. He therefore won 100 percent of the vote.
According to forecasts by CNN and NBC, Trump also clearly won in Idaho. NBC reported that after counting around 60 percent of the votes, the former president had achieved a result of just over 84 percent. The only remaining rival within the party - former US ambassador to the United Nations Nikki Haley - received just under 14% of the vote.
Missouri is located in the middle of the country and has a population of just over six million. Idaho is located in the north-west of the USA and has a population of around two million. In both states, votes were not traditionally cast in polling stations, but at small party meetings - so-called caucus meetings.
Winning all primaries so far
Trump has so far won all the votes in his party's primaries for the presidential election in the fall. Haley has not won a single vote. It remains to be seen how long the 52-year-old will remain in the race, as she is effectively no longer considered to have a chance of beating Trump. Despite various scandals, escapades and a chaotic term as president, her rival has strong support among the party base.
Republican primaries will follow in the coming days, first in the capital district of Washington and in the state of North Dakota, before the next major milestone in the election year on Tuesday: "Super Tuesday" with voting in more than a dozen states. Both Trump and Haley campaigned at the weekend in states where voting will take place on "Super Tuesday".
Anyone who wants to become a presidential candidate in the USA must first prevail in internal party primaries. The candidates are then officially chosen at party conventions in the summer. The Republican nomination convention takes place in mid-July. Finally, the actual presidential election will take place at the beginning of November.
Everything points to a duel between Biden and Trump
For the Democrats, incumbent President Joe Biden wants to run for another term in office. He has no serious competition in his party's internal race. Everything currently points to Biden and Trump running against each other again in the end.
