Police tolerate Tesla protest camp until mid-March
Since Thursday, 80 to 100 environmental activists have been living in a protest camp in Grünheide near Berlin. They want to stop the expansion plans of US car giant Tesla (see video above). The police are tolerating the camp for the time being until mid-March and have imposed several conditions.
For example, the environmental groups are not allowed to erect more than 15 buildings in the forest, light fires or leave piles of garbage behind. The conditions can be viewed at the camp.
Between 80 and 100 environmental activists from many parts of Germany have now expanded their protest camp with ten tree houses. The situation is said to be relaxed. Citizens of the region, including families with children, brought food, toilet paper and other donations during visits.
Population against Tesla plans
Around 9,000 people live in the municipality of Grünheide near Berlin. In a recent survey, the majority of them spoke out against Tesla's plans.
"What else needs to happen for politicians to react and finally put human welfare before profit interests?" said Lou Winters from the alliance "Tesla den Hahn abdrehen" on Saturday. The protest has only just begun and will only get bigger.
Here you can see a post from "Stop Tesla".
The US car giant wants to expand its site, which is partly located in a water protection area, and build a freight station as well as logistics and storage facilities. An area of around 120 hectares is to be cleared for this purpose. With its expansion plans, the company aims to produce one million cars a year. The most recent projection was 300,000 cars per year.
Growing anger for the company
With the protest camp comes growing anger for the car manufacturer. A dispute is also currently raging over Tesla waste water and limit value violations. A quick solution is not in sight.
Environmental movements in Germany have repeatedly opted for tree houses and occupied forests, for example in protests against freeways and coal mining in Lützerath in the German state of North Rhine-Westphalia. The current camp will be tolerated until at least March 15.
