"(Vladimir) Putin has so little respect for Obama that he starts throwing around the word nuclear. You've heard it. Nuclear. He starts talking about nuclear weapons today. I've been waiting for this, but we have an idiot for a president, an idiot. He has said that we will not leave until complete and total victory is achieved. And we could be there for a long time," Trump said on Saturday evening in Richmond.
According to a report in the UK's Guardian newspaper, the crowd in Richmond fell silent and there was an awkward silence when Trump referred to Obama, who left office more than seven years ago.
Tried to portray blunder as intentional
Trump then tried to portray his mix-up as intentional. "I deliberately mix up their names because they are interchangeable in my eyes," he explained. It is the third time Trump has made such a mistake in the past six months.
Trump's mistake came a day after President Biden twice confused Ukraine and the Gaza Strip when he announced on Friday that the US would be dropping humanitarian aid to Palestinians in Gaza, where people are starving due to Israeli bombardments and blockades.
Speech confuses Orban with Erdogan
Mistakes happen to Trump all the time: at the end of October last year, for example, he confused Hungary's head of government Viktor Orbán with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan during an election campaign speech in the small town of Derry in the US state of New Hampshire.
Around a week later, he made another embarrassing blunder at a campaign appearance in the US state of Iowa. He greeted the audience at a campaign appearance in "Sioux Falls" (in South Dakota, note) - but the event took place in Sioux City, the fourth largest city in Iowa ...
