Truck dangles from bridge: Driver rescued by rope
In an accident on a bridge, a truck smashed through the railing - the driver's cab ended up dangling over the river. In a dramatic rescue operation, the driver was finally freed from her predicament using a rope system.
Three vehicles were involved in the accident on Friday on the George Rogers Clark Memorial Bridge, which connects the city of Louisville in the US state of Kentucky with southern Indiana. One injured person was taken to hospital immediately. However, the rescue of the truck driver involved was much more complex.
It took 40 minutes to set up a rope system to rescue the driver from the cab. A helper used it to abseil down to the victim and managed to get her out of the vehicle. She was taken to hospital as a precaution, as reported by the AP news agency.
Specialist company was requested
A company was hired for the complicated rescue, explained Louisville Fire Chief Brian O'Neill. "They train for this kind of thing all the time," he explained. "This is a worst-case scenario." The bridge was closed after the accident - a safety inspection of the bridge was to be carried out after all the vehicles had been recovered.
