Big "Barbie" fan
The woman at Ken’s side: Eva Mendes celebrates her 50th birthday
Eva Mendes is a huge "Barbie" fan - and with good reason. She is so proud to be this Ken's Barbie, the US actress wrote on Instagram in January after the Oscar nominations were announced. "So proud of my husband," emphasized Ryan Gosling's wife, who celebrates her 50th birthday on Tuesday. The couple are parents to two girls, Esmeralda (9) and Amada (7).
The filming of the movie "The Place Beyond the Pines" (2013) brought the Canadian and the Florida-born actress of Cuban descent together.
In the drama, Gosling plays a stunt driver and bank robber, while Mendes plays his ex-girlfriend and mother of his son. Their first child together was born in September 2014, followed by their second daughter in April 2016.
Couple keep their private life a secret
The actors usually keep their private lives very private. In January 2017, Gosling made an exception on the Golden Globe stage. With the Globe trophy for best leading actor in the musical "La La Land" in his hand, he explicitly thanked his "sweetheart". While he was filming the movie, his "lady" looked after their daughter at home and helped her brother, who had cancer, when she was also pregnant. Without her support, he would not have made it here, said Gosling, visibly moved.
For a long time, it was not clear whether the two were even married. Nothing had been made public about a wedding. On the Australian "Today" talk show, Mendes casually made it official in November 2022 when she referred to Gosling as her "husband".
Retired from Hollywood
While the actor continued to be in the spotlight with films such as "Gangster Squad", "La La Land", "Blade Runner 2049" and now "Barbie", Mendes withdrew from the Hollywood business. She herself had a long career with action and comedy hits.
Mendes first caught the attention of moviegoers in 2001 alongside Denzel Washington in the thriller "Training Day". She then took on a larger role in the action flicks "2 Fast 2 Furious", "Out of Time" and "Sometime in Mexico".
She was in front of the camera with Matt Damon for the comedy "Inseparable" and with Will Smith for the comedy hit "Hitch - The Date Doctor". She shot the comedy "The Women" with Meg Ryan, Annette Bening and Bette Midler. In 2009, German director Werner Herzog brought the Latina beauty on board alongside Nicolas Cage for the cop thriller "Bad Lieutenant - Cop Without a Conscience" in the role of a drug-addicted high-class hooker.
Medes does not miss acting
After the romantic drama "Last Night" with Keira Knightley and Sam Worthington, Mendes played her last movie role to date ten years ago in the dark end-time drama "Lost River" (2014) - it was her husband Gosling's directorial debut.
She doesn't really miss acting, Mendes said in an interview with the industry magazine "Variety" in 2022. At the time, she was tired of being stuck with Latina characters and having to fight for good roles. She also wanted to devote herself entirely to her children.
Successful businesswoman
The former model, who at times also brought out her own fashion collection, continues to work as a businesswoman. Mendes is the co-owner of a household company that specializes in antimicrobial kitchen sponges. "I'm Cuban, of course I always do the dishes," she says in a video she posted on Instagram in February. In it, Mendes whirls through a sparkling clean kitchen with promotional effect.
A few weeks before her milestone anniversary, Mendes announced another project - "a true labor of love", she wrote on Instagram. Inspired by her daughters, she wrote her first children's book. The picture book about a little girl who learns to overcome her fear of nocturnal monsters with the help of her mother is due to be published in English and Spanish in the fall.
Glamor in her blood
However, Mendes has not forgotten how to make glamorous appearances. At Milan Fashion Week, the star recently turned heads in black leather, leopard print and highly tousled hair. "Mommy's first fashion week in over 10 years!" she shared on Instagram. She hadn't attended a fashion event since the birth of her first daughter.
Shortly after her 50th birthday, Mendes could be in the spotlight again - at the 96th Academy Awards on March 10 alongside Ryan Gosling. Her Ken is nominated for an Oscar for Best Supporting Actor in "Barbie".
