More than a thousand kilometers of adventure over the Pyrenees

Jakob Herrmann successfully completed the Pyrenees project. Together with his friend Philipp Reiter, the ski mountaineer from Werfenweng had both wonderful and very frightening experiences. He has no regrets about any of them.

Ski mountaineer Jakob Herrmann and his friend Philipp Reiter wanted to take ten days to cross the Pyrenees from the Mediterranean to the Atlantic. But it turned out to be just under 13 days. "Unfortunately, there wasn't enough snow for ski touring in some places, so everything took longer," sighed the 36-year-old. Between the start in Collioure and the finish in Hendaye (both Fra), the two athletes had a movement time of 61 hours. The other figures are incredible: they covered a total of 1082 kilometers, 910 on the bike, 122 on skis and 50 on foot. Reiter and Herrmann overcame 26,800 meters of altitude!

As incredible as these numbers are, so were the experiences. On the Spanish side of the Pyrenees, there had been no rain for months in some places. Werfenwenger tells an anecdote about this: "We once stopped on the Spanish side and wanted to get our bearings. There was a lake on the map - the size of Lake Wolfgangsee - but I couldn't find one," Herrmann was confused. Until a local told him that the lake had dried up within a summer two years ago.

Looking forward to his wife and bed
Nevertheless, the ski mountaineer doesn't want to miss a second: "It was great to do a project like this with one of my best friends in an area like this." Although he enjoyed the most beautiful mountains in the Pyrenees, the Werfenwenger also wanted to return to Pongau: "What I'm looking forward to most now is my wife, my parents and my bed," he said, spending the past two weeks in his camper van.
