Spectacular operation for the fire department in Liezen (Styria) on Tuesday night. A fire broke out on the first floor of a residential and commercial building for as yet unexplained reasons. 20 residents had to be evacuated.

At around 1 a.m., a fire broke out on the first floor of a residential and commercial building in Ausseer Straße in Liezen for as yet unexplained reasons. "When we arrived, the flames were already shooting up from the business premises along the façade to the adjoining apartments," said the Liezen-Stadt fire department.

20 people and one cat evacuated
The fire department needed heavy breathing protection in order to begin investigating the situation in the apartments located above the fire premises. "20 people had to get out of their apartments, most of them had already rescued themselves on the street," said a fire department spokesperson. Later on, a cat was rescued from one of the apartments. "A search and subsequent registration of the residents revealed that fortunately no people were missing. As far as we know, no one was injured either," said the fire department spokesperson.

Spread prevented
Thanks to the rapid and targeted intervention of the fire department (in addition to the Liezen-Stadt fire brigade, colleagues from Pyhrn, Weißenbach bei Liezen, Selzthal and Wörschach were also involved), it was possible to prevent the fire from spreading to neighboring properties. "However, the heat was so great that damage could even be seen on the house opposite the site of the fire," according to the Liezen fire department.

Operation lasting several hours
Thanks to the rapid intervention of the 95 firefighters, the fire was quickly brought under control so that the first firefighters could be withdrawn from the operation around two hours after being alerted. Around four hours after the alarm was raised, the incident commander was able to declare "fire out".

The residents of the affected apartments were moved to temporary accommodation and the cause of the fire is the subject of a police investigation.
