An era at WSG Tirol will come to an end in May and the Bundesliga club will have to look for a new coach after this season. Thomas Silberberger announced his decision to step down after eleven years as head coach at Wattens at a press conference on Wednesday. "The decision was not easy for me. But it's been lying dormant inside me all year," explained the 50-year-old, who wants to achieve relegation with WSG as his last major goal.

Silberberger is by far the longest-serving coach in the Bundesliga. The Tyrolean took over WSG in May 2013 in fourth place in the regional league, led them into the Bundesliga in June 2019 and into the Champions League in the 2020/21 season. "There have been many highlights in the eleven years, but the highlight was certainly June 1, 2019 with the promotion to the Bundesliga. But I also wouldn't have wanted to miss the championship play-off, second place in the Bundesliga coach rankings and the European Cup play-off final against SK Rapid," summarized Silberberger.

Grateful for eleven years
It had been clear to him for some time that he was calling it a day in Wattens. "I already decided during the summer preparations that this would probably be my last year. This became clear once again during the winter preparations and now I just want to clarify things for everyone as early as possible. At the end of the season, I will be leaving WSG after a fantastic eleven years. From my point of view, nothing remains except friendships. I'm just grateful that I've been able to do this for eleven years," said Silberberger

"Losing a friend"

WSG now faces the unfamiliar task of having to find a new coach. Sports manager Stefan Köck was sad on Wednesday. "A separation always hurts, but this one in particular. We are not only losing a successful coach at WSG, but also a friend and a top sportsman who has significantly and successfully shaped this club in recent years, and of course it was a surprise," explained Köck.

The aim now is to achieve the last common goal and keep WSG in the Bundesliga for the fifth season. And "that we then have a wonderful final party", as Köck said.
