Logistics company Gebrüder Weiss spools fewer kilometers
The Vorarlberg logistics company has to cope with a drop in turnover of 500 million euros
The Vorarlberg-based logistics group Gebrüder Weiss has had to accept a slump in net sales from 3 to 2.47 billion euros in 2023. The corona-related special effects of the two previous years did not continue in 2023, according to the company. Geopolitical conflicts and a globally subdued economic performance also had a negative impact on turnover and transported volumes. Despite the decline in turnover, the company is still above its growth trend from 2015 to 2020.
Gebrüder Weiss traditionally does not disclose business figures other than turnover. "Despite the weaker economy, we have succeeded in contributing to the success of our customers in their global sales markets with first-class service," said Wolfram Senger-Weiss, CEO of Gebrüder Weiss, on Thursday. The company's stable financial situation has also allowed for a comprehensive investment program. "Due to coronavirus, many projects had been postponed and could now be realized in 2023," explained Senger-Weiss.
Net sales in the Air & Sea division returned to the previous level at EUR 774 million. Due to high freight rates from shipping companies and airlines, Gebrüder Weiss generated EUR 1.27 billion in this division in the previous year. However, with declining energy and fuel costs, turnover in the overland transport and logistics divisions remained largely stable at EUR 1.45 billion (2022: EUR 1.48 billion). The equity ratio was increased to 63% (2022: 60%).
Expansion at international level
The record investment volume of 187 million euros (2022: 67 million euros) was mainly invested in expanding the network in Germany, the USA and south-eastern Europe. The logistics specialist consolidated its position in Bavaria in particular, while the US network was expanded with new locations in Miami and Laredo (Texas). In Austria, new logistics warehouses were built in Graz and Reutte. The acquisitions increased the number of employees at the 180 locations worldwide to 8,600 (2022: 8,400), of which around 3,000 work in Austria.
