Manager now a “preacher” for the value of food

"It makes my heart bleed that food is simply thoughtlessly thrown away," says Gerald Hackl. Around one million tons of food end up in the bin in Austria every year. People are far more careful with vacations and fuel - this annoys the Vivatis boss, who is therefore going on the offensive.

From Knabbernossi and Inzersdorfer to Wojnar's: many well-known brands belong to the Vivatis Group based in Linz. "As a group, we go to great lengths to produce our high-quality food using the best raw materials under the best conditions," says Gerald Hackl.

The fact that around one million tons of food ends up in the bin every year in Austria annoys the head of the Group: "Obviously food has little value - otherwise it wouldn't be thrown away."

Hackl can't understand this: "You don't fill up with diesel or petrol and then throw it away again. And when you go on vacation, you stay for the seven days you booked and don't go home after four days and let the rest go to waste."

"We stand by Austria"
The food manufacturer is under enormous cost pressure: "We still pay three times the price of electricity and gas." Disadvantages in competition with international brands are accepted: "We stand by Austria, we want to produce here. We buy all the raw materials we can get here." Hackl never tires of pointing out the value of food and calling for a more conscious approach: "We are preachers."
