Fifth goal in the competition
“Mr. European Cup” Gregoritsch lets Freiburg dream
The dream of a first European quarter-final is alive: SC Freiburg won the Europa League 1:0 against Conference League champions West Ham United thanks to Michael Gregoritsch. It was the fifth goal in the seventh match of the current competition for Freiburg's "Mr. European Cup".
You can rely on Michael Gregoritsch. After scoring the winner in the 3-2 extra-time victory against Lens in the previous round, the ÖFB team striker was also the match-winner for SC Freiburg in the first leg of the round of 16 of the Europa League against West Ham United on Thursday. His goal in the 81st minute was the only one. The Styrian had only come on as a substitute ten minutes earlier and was once again a "wild card". A role he has often had to play this season.
In the Europa League, he was only in the starting eleven twice in his seven appearances. In the league, his appearances from the start are balanced out by those as a substitute with eleven each. In the league, two attacking rivals, Vincenzo Grifo and Lucas Höler, have scored seven goals each, more than the ÖFB attacker (4). On the other hand, he has been Freiburg's measure of all things at European level so far. With five goals, Gregoritsch is the fourth most successful player in the current Europa League season, with Marseille attacker Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang (9) leading the scoring charts.
"It's a great thing of course, always something special to score the winning goal, I really enjoy that," said Gregoritsch in the Sky interview. His team-mates were delighted with him and had words of praise. "Gregerl is there. What sets him apart is that he's right back up front and pushes the ball over the line. He's an important player for us," said central defender Manuel Gulde. And Matthias Ginter added: "It's helpful when we can step up from the bench like that."
"Have to be just as brave in the second leg"
Gregoritsch described the success in a "50:50 game" as "extremely important" for his team. "It puts us in a good starting position." The first part of a revenge for the two defeats in the group stage (1:2 home, 0:2 away) was achieved against the English side. This must be made perfect on March 14 in London. "I don't think the two defeats in the group stage were so bad. We have to be as brave with the ball in the second leg as we were today," said the 29-year-old.
