Styria: The snow was only on a short visit

It snowed in parts of Styria on Friday night and the white splendor raised hopes of a return of winter for some. But the snow won't stay for long - and according to Ubimet, another cold front is not in sight for the time being. Instead, rain is coming.

Styrians woke up on Friday to the sight of a freshly snow-covered landscape, especially in the north of the province. "From Mariazellerland to the Wechsel region, it also snowed down to lower altitudes, but there wasn't much more than four centimetres of fresh snow," says meteorologist Michele Salmi from Ubimet. And for anyone hoping for a return of winter, he has bad news. "There is no further cold front in sight for the near future and the snow line is rising again to 1000 to 1500 meters."

Low pressure area brings rain
This also makes it clear that the low-pressure area that will pass over Styria between Sunday and Tuesday will mainly bring rain and no snow: "It's a very sluggish low-pressure complex coming from the west. That's why it's still difficult to say exactly where there will be the most precipitation. But snowfall is really only possible at higher altitudes," explains Salmi.

Temperatures remain spring-like
Temperatures will also be anything but wintry in the coming days: "At lower altitudes in the south, temperatures of up to 15 degrees are possible on Saturday and the following days. It will be colder in the north, but even there temperatures will often rise into the high single digits. Frost is not really an issue at the moment," explains Salmi.
