Concern about Ferrari driver
Hospital! Sainz misses the Saudi Arabian GP
Worry about Carlos Sainz! The Ferrari driver will miss the Saudi Arabian GP. He is suffering from appendicitis and has to be operated on in hospital, the Scuderia announced. The Spaniard had already canceled his participation in the press conference yesterday. He will be replaced in the cockpit by 18-year-old Briton Oliver Bearman.
Sainz was already feeling unwell on Wednesday and looked anything but fit at the start of the weekend in Saudi Arabia. Nevertheless, he completed both practice sessions on Thursday, but skipped the subsequent media appointment. He finished the first practice session in sixth place and was seventh fastest in the second. "That was obviously a difficult day after feeling really bad for the last 24 hours. It was a tough and difficult few hours for me," he said.
"Today was just about learning as much as possible about the car without pushing too hard, because I still don't feel well. But we were able to finish our program and had no problems."
Appendicitis
His condition apparently took a turn for the worse on Friday night. "Carlos Sainz has been diagnosed with appendicitis and will require surgery," wrote the traditional racing team on X. "The Ferrari family wishes Carlos a speedy recovery."
Bearman instead of Sainz
For the rest of the weekend, substitute driver Oliver Bearman, who is only 18 years old, will therefore drive Sainz's car. The Brit usually drives for the Prema team in the Formula 2 junior series. He has been a member of Ferrari's driver academy since 2022. Last year, he gained some Formula 1 experience with Ferrari partner team Haas during practice sessions in Mexico and Abu Dhabi.
Last Saturday, Sainz finished third in the season opener in Bahrain. The next GP will take place in Australia on March 24. The Madrid-born driver hopes to be fit again by then.
