Forgotten on microphone
Gaza war: Biden wants to “read Netanyahu the riot act”
There is little hope of a ceasefire in the Gaza Strip and the release of hostages before the start of Ramadan. Now US President Joe Biden is apparently increasingly losing patience with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. After his State of the Union address on Thursday, the US head of state also let the public know this via a forgotten microphone.
In his speech, Biden warned Israel that humanitarian aid for the population in the Gaza Strip should "not be a secondary consideration or a bargaining chip". Biden sharply criticized Netanyahu's intransigent stance on the issue. "Protecting and saving innocent lives must be a priority," he demanded.
"Netanyahu must allow more help"
With the microphone still switched on, Biden announced shortly after the speech in what appeared to be a private meeting with senators and his Secretary of State that he wanted to "tell Netanyahu off": "I told Bibi: 'You and I are going to have a come-to-Jesus meeting,'" he said, calling Netanyahu by his nickname. The colloquial term "Come to Jesus" is used in the USA to describe a meeting where people talk straight. Later, Biden went one better and answered the question of whether Netanyahu should allow more aid for the Gaza Strip with: "Yes, he should."
During a visit to the state of Pennsylvania on Friday, Biden told journalists that the chances of a ceasefire and the release of hostages from the hands of Islamist Hamas before the start of the Muslim month of fasting were "slim". Many had hoped for such an agreement so that more aid could reach the Gaza Strip and Hamas hostages could be released.
Ramadan: Hamas leader calls for storming of Al-Aqsa mosque
In addition, fears of a further escalation during Ramadan had recently grown after Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh, who lives in Qatar, called on all Palestinians to flock en masse to the Al-Aqsa Mosque in Jerusalem at the beginning of the month. The Muslim month of fasting begins on Monday or Sunday evening, depending on the sighting of the crescent moon.
US Secretary of State Antony Blinken said on Friday that the problem in the negotiations was Hamas. "The ball is in their court," Blinken said at a meeting with Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan in Washington. The Hamas delegation had broken off talks in Cairo on Thursday, mediated by the USA, Egypt and Qatar, and traveled to Doha for consultations. The reason given was that the Israeli government's responses to date "did not meet the minimum requirements".
